Alex is the Star and the King of the New York Zoo. People come from all over just to see his regalness. He is enamored with himself being the king, but loves his best friends. He is considered the leader of the Zoo, and is the voice of reason.

Marty is the Zebra at the New York Zoo. He loves his job, but soon realizes that turning 10 (double digits) is old in Zebra years. So he sets out on his own to find Connecticut. He believes Connecticut will have wide open spaces to roam. He sets out on his own, and soon Alex, Melman and Gloria follow. His birthday is April 9.

Melman

Melman is the New York Zoo's star Giraffe. Of course, he is more than a little neurotic. He has a voice of reason, only when it is convenient to his safety. He also has an affection for Gloria, the star hippo. He can be seen in the opening scenes of Madagascar wearing an Elizabethan Collar, as many dogs and cats where to keep them from scratching themselves.

Gloria

Gloria is the star hippo of the New York Zoo. She is beautiful in the water, as well as graceful. However, she also forgets her large size, but does so, sweetly. She is unaware that Melman has affection for her, which makes it all the more interesting for the animal dynamic.
